Put about 600 miles on my baby last weekend & I think those damn Missouri back roads knocked something loose in my exaust. There's kinda a rattle, definately more prominent when it's in gear, and above 1500rpm.
Any Idea what is it and more importantly, how I can fix it?
Exaust is Flowmaster.
Thanks in advance for answering my stoopid question...... :D
I had an exhaust rattle on my 98 and it ended up being the weld on the cross support between the catalytic converters had broken loose. I had the dealer remove it. (They said it really wasn't needed) Hope that helps!
Yep. Was underneath her for 1/2 an hour this AM checking everything out, all looks good.
Ok, get back under there. Look at where the over the axle pipes from the mufflers bolt to the h-pipe/converter pipe. See the flange with the 2 bolts? There is one on each side. Shake the flange area hard. Look at the wield at the pipe to flange. The wield on the muffler flange will be ok. The flange on the cat converter side may be broken. THAT could be the cause of your rattle!
There are a bunch of C5s that have a bad wield here. There's talk of a recall because of this. Here's what my pipe looked like. Note how the wield didn't appear to stick to the flange.
Had same thing happen to my flowmasters! Loose baffles inside, 1 year warranty only from flowmaster, you can buy new ones from Jegs for $219 ea. or just get a new cat back exhaust which is what I did. My advice would be to get the Borla Stinger exhaust before it goes up in price! I think Xtreme has them for $499. You can check your mufflers by hitting them from underneath they should rattle, mine did. Hope this helps, they are a bitch to get off if you want to save the over axle pieces.
If you cant spot anything with the car on 4 Jackstands, have someone (who you trust) start up the car, put it in first and let out the clutch. This "realtime" use may show you the rattle. :smash:
If your flowmasters are rattling like mine were, you don't even need to start the car, just give them a rap with your hand in the middle of the muffler they will rattle if broken. :yesnod:
