Default Normal transmission temps?

What does GM consider "normal" operating temperatures for the transmission in a A4? Also what is to high and when it gets above a certain temp does it trigger a check engine light or what?

Just asking because with the new converter I am watching it closer but don't know the thresholds.

Well, I am not sure about what is normal. Some people with tranny coolers never go over 200 degress under normal driving. I reached 221 on the highway in 80 degrees temps. The books say the DIC sensors will trigger an overheating mode at 266 degress. Going across the desert to Las Vegas in 100 degree weather might run my temp up to 230-240 since I installed the ST-3500 torque converter. Funny you should mention this, because I just came from the garage installing a tranny cooler. I should finish up tomorrow, just need to connect the hoses.

Yank always advises the installation of a tranny cooler, noted within the box!

In stock condition and earlier this year, I was running 185F max. However, the outside high temps were fairly mild (75-85F).

Now, with the temp much higher (indicating >100F on my digital display), my temps. are 185-199F. This was on a trip of 50 miles last week. When I am in slow traffic with A/C on and high temps outside, the tranny temp is the highest. I have noticed high humidity's also contribute to elevated temps (we have had >70% humidity here for most of the week).

I'm in the "too lazy to install a cooler" camp. :bb I run a 160 thermostat and have lowered fan control temps. Normal ECT for me is around ~180-195, oil and tranny temps about 10-15 degrees higher (and generally slower in variation than ECT.) I've seen TFT as much as just under 220 for "spirited driving." I saw typical temps more like 225 with the stock setup (running SY3500 and 3.73s now) so I'm fairly comfortable w/o an additional cooler. If it ain't broke... I'm planning for an FLP unit but this one doesn't seem to be dying as quickly as I thought it might, knock wood :)

The Owner's Manual on my '01 says that if you get the trans temp warning, take it easy until the temp drops below 230. I'd use that number as my "max continuous" number
