unfortunately another charge system failure please help!?
ok so i know this has been covered but ive searched and searched not only here but google and other places as well and well i believe ive covered everything i could and i keep getting the message!
heres the story
01 6spd ls1 vette sat for about a month one day tried to drive it and would turn over no power, so i jumped it took a whole minute but it did finally start. Then the dreaded "charge system failure" message appeared so i honestly just figured it was the alternator my vette has 150k on it ive owned it since 65k so im certain it was the original...so i just assumed and got a new one because signs pointed towards lights dimming more than usual when using windows and it would retain a charge at all. so after the new alternator from duralast autozone 110amp i went with autozone because they were the only one in the area with one in stock and i didnt want to deal with shipping or waiting etc. After the install i thought great problem solved but NOOO message still there but at least the car holds power... it holds power like normal but it doesnt turn over with the full ummmpphhh that it used to if that makes sense. So the only problem i have is the message. So that led me to check on why the message appears so yes: i have cleaned the grounds that i believe are related the two under hood on either side close to headlights...and today i pulled passenger tire to inspect pcm i cleaned all connections and everything seemed pretty normal... and well message still there so this is why i am turning to my fellow corvette owners. i feel my circumstances could be unique or i missed something. Could it just be the crappy autozone alternator?? are there more grounds related that i missed?? i also cleaned connections to alternator so i know thats not it. ohh and battery is less than a year old and connections to battery terminals are clean as well. someone please help me out thanks soooo much in advance especially for those that took the time to read my mini story
I hope you still have your old alternator. You first need to have your battery load tested. It may be your problem. It could have been the old alternator but I doubt it. Unless you get really really lucky, an over the counter alternator is not going to work in the Corvette. I would only get a rebuilt alternator directly from a national rebuilder AFTER I talked with them.
Hope the jump start did not cause an issue with the PCM. Here is the overall design below.
PS: Never jump start a C5 with a dead battery. Charge your battery.
unfortunately i do not have the original alternator gave it as core... i should have trusted my gut as i was hesitant to get the autozone one but it was the only one available.... i was not aware of not jumping the car i now have a charger so i use that from here forward but i had never had issues in the past. I suppose my next step is to have the battery tested thanks alot guys i feel like an idiot now that i know your not suppose to jump them... will any parts do for the testing our do recommend one over the other. and if i am screwed with this alternator is the next step dropping a pretty penny on a good one? any recommendations on which one to get since i doubt i can get my old one from autozone its been a few weeks.
haha and yes im constantly clearing codes...
again thanks fellas ill have it tested tomorrow and report back
ps the gauge always reads right at 13-13.2 and does not flex seems to be spot on it just doesnt start strong but it does start, i start and drive it daily now once last week i gave it a few days and thought it might not start but it did just again not with its normal strenght.

Check with that Autozone, they may still have it and it is a good place to have your battery LOAD tested. That may have been the problem all along.
Here are two links you need to read. First you need to make sure you have a GOOD battery. While the car is running, you need to measure the actual voltage at the battery to see if your reading at the dash is correct. If the battery is lower than about 14.2-14.6 volts it could be the alternator or the starter connections. If the battery reads fully charged then the ignition switch is the problem.
