Power Steering Fluid Flush
Anybody done a power steering fluid change, and flush their system. In the past I have just taken my GTB (Giant Turkey Baster) and sucked out as much fluid as possible, and then topped it off. I repeated this a couple of times.
I'm more interested in getting all the old fluid out this time though. Anyone care to share their procedure?
Forgot to mention why I want to do this. While at on a track day in the high desert yesterday, the power steering would suddenly feel like it was turned off. The car was still running, and I was under speed, it just got hard to steer for just a second or two. It was very hot out there. When I got back into the pits to check the fluid, a little bit of smoke came out of the reservoir. Any thoughts?
Do you have a steering cooler? It comes standard with the Z51 suspension, can be easily added from Chevy parts bin if you don't have it. On the other hand, my car DOES have the cooler and I sometimes get a small puff of vapor (not smoke, I hope) if I open the reservoir after some hot laps. The problem with overheating the system is that you can do damage that can get pretty expensive to fix, and may not show up until you get it hot again.
I had mine flushed this Spring, the procedure is not intuitive (at least to me) but it's in the Service Manual. Takes two people and several quarts of fluid.

Re: Power Steering Fluid Flush (Gearhead Jim)
Thanks, Gear,
On another note, what weight oil did you use in your rear end? Err, differential, I mean? I'm changing mine this weekend. I already have the additive from GM, and will be picking up the oil tomorrow.
