Ive searched and found info on when to replace, etc. but I'm still not sure. Sometimes, not all the time, when I'm stopped at a light and I get the green I'll put it in 1st and let off the clutch to go. The shifter will shake and a grinding sound results and it pops back to neutral. I'll have to shift back in to 1st and then it will go. It only happens in 1st after trying to take off from a dead stop and only does it maybe 10-20% of the time.
The car is a 98 C5 with 102K. I've only owned the car 2 weeks. To my knowledge the previous owner did not replace the clutch. Who knows if it has ever been done.
Sounds like a transmission problem, not a clutch problem. I also had the same as you. Bought my car and didn't find out for a couple of weeks that I had a bad 5th gear scyno, milked it for a year before I replaced the trans.
Man I hope not. I'll be so pissed if he knew the trans was bad and didn't tell me.
You can try something very simple first, a shifter alignment. Do a search on shifter alignment, you should find plenty. If not, I'll dig something up. Popping out of first gear when going from a stop is kind of common when the shifter needs alignment. It may cure your issue. If not, then you might be looking at transmission work, but try the simplest thing first.
When I had this problem, it was often easier to put it in second and then shift to first, before taking off. I performed the alignment, and all was fixed.
The shift rods have small joints that wear out. This causes lost motion when you shift. I had the same problem. Replaced the rod, installed a new c6 shifter with poly mounting bushings, did the alignment procedure and it's shifts great.
The bad news is you have to pull the trans to replace it. The shift alignment procedure is a quick and easy start. If it's still not right, replace the linkage rod (about $100.00 for part).
Mine does that but otherwise shifts fine. Shifter alignment didn't help and the trans seems fine otherwise. I can tell just by how it feels going into first if it'll hold or not. There is a certain feel where it just slips fully into 1st with no resistance and then it never jump back out. Hope the alignment helps you but if all the other gears shift good then most likely the transmission would have to come out to fix it.
