Default Parking Brake Cable Removal

I finally decided to change the parking brake cable on the passenger side of my 2001. Under the car I go to start the removal. I follow the steps in the manual. The problem is, how do I remove the old cable from the bracket? The manual makes it look easy. It probably is but when laying on my back and looking up I can't figure out how to do it.

Any suggestions?

I just had to remove the cables on my 98 . I had read where you can push in the 3 tabs to release the cable from the bracket. I did't feel that I had enough hands to do this. I removed the 2 bolts that held the bracket to the backing plate which would let you unhook the end of the cable. I think the 2 bolts were about 15mm, it was very easy.

After removing the cable end from the lever, slide a 13mm 12 point box wrench over the cable. This will depress the fingers so you can remove the cable from the bracket.

It worked! It was too cold out to finish the job so I will see if it is a little warmer tomorrow in the garage.

that's is by far the easiest way to remove the cables. We do it all the time. They should put that technique in the service manuals!

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead in hopes it'll help someone, including me! I dont know if @18436572 "Don" is still active on the forum, or not. BUT-My 2000 is riveted, not bolted, to the floor of the trunk. It's really tight up there, even using my lift. If I could drill out the rivets, I dont see a way to get a rivet gun up there to rerivet the thing to the floor. I'll try PMing him. Hopefully, someone can chime in and offer some insight. The key to the job is getting the old cables out of the bracket......

They make a tool for that like pliers. I have them. Worked great every time I needed them.

Have you tried using them on the upper cables on a C5?

Not yet. But one day. They've worked well on every other GM car I've had to work on so far.
