Is there any interest in an aftermarket engine and manual transmission oil cooler kit?
The engine oil cooler kit will include a 32mm x 340mm plate & fin, oil to air heat exchanger with lines and remote filter mounting kit. Something like this will cost approx $ 350.00 and be ideal for modified engines. This is very similar to the oil cooler I am developing for the production C6. Another option is a remote mounted oil to water type cooler, similar to the production unit I designed for the 2003 VGX. This will be easier to package, and will be priced in the same range.
The manual (MN6 & M12) transmission cooler kit will include a 19mm x 280mm plate & fin cooler with a Spal fan, high performace oil pump & all plumbing lines. This kit will be ideal for racing applications or extended high speed driving. The cost of this package would be approx $ 675.00
If there is enough interest (10 to 20 people) I will put together a kit and provide some pics and performance numbers.
If I didnt just get the DRM Radiator/Oil Cooler setup, I would definitely be interested. If I get more into roadracing, the transmission cooler would defintitely be a consideration.
Well there seems to be some interest here. I will take some pics next week.
The engine oil cooler setup uses 5/8" oil side hose and will cause a back pressure of 18psi at 10 gpm oil flow. This is pretty much WOT for the LS1/6 oil pump. For the oil to water cooler, with a stock radiator and a MN6 or M12 you will see a oil temp reduction of 30-35f. This cooler is a little easier to mount than a oil to air cooler, it has foot print of only 140mm x 80mm.
The transmission cooler system is a little more complex. It is only for the MN6 and M12. It feeds off of the tranny fill/drain plugs, and the pump only operates with the oil temp exceeds 200f (this is adjustable). There is a thermistor on the feed line that controls the pump. The position of the cooler is really dependent on the type of exhaust system you have. The cooler is 32mm thick and 253mm wide and 280mm high. I do have a Spal fan that I have mounted on these for applications where the air flow is very low. The oil pump is a Sumitomo 12v pump that cost over 300.00 alone.
Will it have a thermostat? I'd ideally like the car to warm up quick to slightly above 212 degrees (to boil moisture out of the oil), but then have the thermostat open to keep the oil temp below 220-230.
When I was at Gingerman Raceway last week (a 2 mile roadcourse), my oil temp got up to 268, and would have climbed more if I didn't back off a little to let the car cool down. Do you think this cooler could keep the oil temp below 240?
