Hi,
Read alot of the history on oil changes and did the last one myself. If I'm doing it every 3-4k, most highway, do I really need to do the filter? What are you guys doing? Not a cost issue, but a time one.
Assuming you're using a full synthetic oil, your time would be better saved by replacing your filter every 3k miles and changing your oil every 6k miles and replenishing the oil level. But, truthfully, the effort involved in getting the car up on jackstands to drain the oil (since the nose has to be lower than the rear to get the oil to drain properly) and draining the oil will take more time than the five minutes it takes to remove/replace the filter.
Thanks all, the decision is to change every time. Just to point out again, I wasn't trying to save $5.00 but 15 minutes. The "withstupid" reply was pretty much uncalled for and quite uncharacteristic of this board.
if you're already changing the oil it takes longer for it to properly drain than it does to remove and install a new filter....no way in the world it adds 15 minutes to the time it takes to do a proper oil change
as I see someone else has already explained the "I'm w/ Stupid" smiley, I won't re-hash it
Change the Oil & Filter about every 7,500 Miles and your car will last forever.Use Mobil 1 & A Delco Filter. You only will need to Change sooner if you live on A long Dirt Road.

Re: Oil filter every change? (BobbyD)
Even though the filter is relatively small on the LS1, it still contains dirty oil. I always change the filter with the oil - only takes a few minutes and the cost is relatively small. To me, it is just good insurance.
For the price of oil filters, and the time it takes to change one, I do it at every oil change. Which it every 2,000 miles. If you are leasing the car, that's another story.
Except i change every 3000-4000 depending on how it was drove(lots of short trips vs. hwy)So far every car i have owned had gone over 100k mi.
The Department of Defense did an oil study about 10 years ago. Bottom line is we changed oil way too often. Now, we do an oil alalysis first to determine its condition. It lasts much longer than imagined, however filters are replaced with every change or yearly if the oil is still serviceable.
Theory being that as a filter nears contaminant capacity the passageways become even smaller thus filtering better. The filter will clean best right before it cloggs. Bottom line change the filter at least yearly no matter how clean your oil looks.
My dad and I always change the filters at every oil change. Dirty or not. Even on our diesels. I change the oil on mine at 3000 and though it is WAY to often, I like the idea of having clean oil and filter in my truck and all vehicles so when I go to romp on em, they are getting fed dirty oil.
Absolutely change the filter every time you change your oil. At $8-$10, it's cheap insurance. Time is not a factor .. you can easily replace the filter during the time it takes for the old oil to drain.
When Consumer Reports did a report on oil and change intervals, they discovered that OIL DOES NOT REQUIRE CHANGING within the test limits they imposed. I forget the exact numbers but they pretty much said that DOUBLING interval mileage was OK but they would still change out the filter at that time.
They could not discern wear differences between old oil and new oil. They were unable to find additional problems of any sort. Even their final recommendations are stated to be conservative.
Essentially, we are being mislead by the sellers of these products.
It may give you a comfy feeling to do this, but it definitly is not needed. If you throw in the 250% minimum markup for the improved qualities of the fully synthetic analogs, we could only be larger suckers for this scam.
As soon as I leave my warranty grace period, I'll be the guy slowing down this fleecing process. I know that with the addition of my quart per 3000 miles that I'll be going 10,000 or annual.
I'll let you know if my casual attitude costs me anything.
It hasn't before on my other vehicles.
Our fellow service member has stated that annual change-out works for the biggest fleet of off-the-road vehicles known to man. I am positive that every one of the E-4's and lower ranks do not know how to act as if every one of these Government monsters is not supposed to be shifted at the RPM governor intrusion. (I DID!) IU am also willing tobet that this abuse takes place in every environment where a person can survive enclosed in a vehicle.
If the information Bulletin is not classified, I'm sure it would be of great interest to we readers of such statistical penny-pinching analysis. What the heck we all paid for it! :D
This sounds like old school thinking. “Changing your oil is just oil company propaganda so they can make money. If you must change your oil do the filter every other oil change”. You will save $3.00. Change your oil and filter every 3000 miles or every 3 months. This will give your engine the longest life.
