I've tried one aftermarket computer in my 2000 A4, which firmed up the shifts, raised the shift RPM to about 6400, and made the car about .2 seconds quicker at the track. I loved this thing... Only problem was it couldn't keep the torque converter locked up while cruising the freeway. After autotapping, my guess was it was mis-reading the TCC slip speed, and disengaging/re-engaging to try to get the slip to 0. Factory computer has no problem keeping the TCC locked up, so I had to go back.
So, where can I get that 2/10ths back and still have my TCC working properly? Should I just go with Hypertech? I'd prefer something that allows me to make changes later (if I add heads and cam, for example). I don't live close to anyone who can do a dyno-tune.
Re: best reprogramming option for my a4? (y2kredauto)
HPPIII is very limited and not for a H/C setup. I had it for a while but it is basic and made for the masses. You'll have to sell it when you go to H/C. I went with LS1-edit. I have full and complete control of everything, but I have a whole lot to learn. So far I've changed my redline to 6800 with an ARE h/c package. I'm doing shift points and larger injectors and, well there is no limit with it. Go to Carputing.com, it's $550. They also have there own forum and mailing lists for Q/A.
Re: best reprogramming option for my a4? (y2kredauto)
Unless you changed gears it's not due to an inaccurate slip speed value. The test criteria are tight and it's easy to exceeed them with virtually any aftermarket converter. Relaxing the test parameters will do the trick. (It's actually a workaround for incorrect computations too. Don't ask how I know.) The HPP3 will not do anything useful as far as this problem goes. If you like the DIY angle, LS1-Edit is about the only option. Alternatively, if you liked your custom tuning have your programmer take another shot at fixing your TCC problems. :smash:
Re: best reprogramming option for my a4? (ToplessTexan)
Thanks for the info, guys. I was a little afraid of the complexity of LS1-edit, but I guess I can start with small changes...
The tuner tried several things to fix the slip problem, and unfortunately he's ready to give up. Since I don't live near him, this was a ship it back and forth kind of thing, which tired us both out. My factory computer handles the TCC fine, so I figure he must just have a bug in his program or ther's something funky about my car.
BTW, I did have to try 2 converters before I got one that would stay locked up at cruise.
