K&N makes a good filter but you still use that piece of garbage air box and unless you modify it , it will not flow enough air. The Blackwing does away with the factory air box completely. :yesnod:
My BAD thought you were talking about factory size replacement filter. Anything is better than stock, but like you said most of the guys seem to use the Blackwing or the Vortex.
The Blackwing is made by Donaldson, a company several times larger than K & N. Donaldson makes filters for 18 wheelers and military vehicles.
The Blackwing has consistantly brought higher dyno numbers and its about half the price of that K & N piece. If you are talking about just a K & N filter, its useless if you still use the stock air box. Even the 2002 Z06 lid doesn't make much difference.
K&N does make a bolt on filter that fits like the Blackwing and is very good. It will give you all the air you could ever need. Check out a local hot rod shop or one of the parts places; Jegs, etc. :smash: :)
I have a conical K&N filter on my car, it replaces the whole airbox. It was about $45, and I paid another $8 for a second (tiny) filter for the breather that usually attaches to the airbox.
I never dynoed before the filter change. Another forum member did and I think got a 10rwhp gain, about 315rwhp after the filter.
I only have 303rwhp with the K&N filter :( My air-fuel numbers are only so-so, tuning would help but I'm not going to do it until after I get headers, intake manifold, and a cam. I've no idea what my dyno would have been without the K&N, but since I am at the low end of 99 6 speed dynoes, I doubt it would have been much lower than the 303rwhp I have now.
It's possible that dyno gains people see from air filters are more related to air-fuel ratio changes that resulted from the mod, than actual increased air flow. If that is the case, then with LS1edit tuning before and after, the before and after dyno numbers would be about equal. It can also be detected if your before dyno had suboptimal AFR, and your after dyno had more ideal AFR.
I'd love to see a back-to-back dyno of a blackwing (or other air filter), with included AFR from a wideband O2.
I replaced my stock C5 box with a K&N filter and ZO6 airbox($100), it does let the engine breath a little better and keeps the water out (I drive in various weather conditions)..If you drive in good weather only the blackwing will give you more air intake which equals more performance..
I installed the K&N FIPK which replaces the entire stock set up. I'm sure that any given engine can only use so much air and I doubt that a stock or almost stock LS1 can use more air than what will flow through this K&N, or just about any of the after market systems. I don't think that just sticking a new filter element in the stock box will really do much, but I'm sure it all adds up (at least in the mind). I suppose the dyno is the only true answer, but how true is it compared to driving at a high speed and force feeding a little air? Justa thought and my .02
Good Luck!
