I had to change water pump on our 97. After refilling and starting it, I think there might be a problem. Idiling, the temp comes up to about 226 then the fans come on and it drops to around 215. is this normal? I guess never paid any attention before. Just don't remember the temp getting that high. Any ideas? Thanks!

There's a whole thread all about this.
From what I remember, the 226 is about normal.
215 as well.
I even remember reading something about GM coming out with a higher pressure radiator cap for the vette due to higher than 'normal' cars operating temperatures.
I'll find the thread and post a link to it here.

looks normal to me... obviously it will drop while driving due to airflow past the radiator... you can have a tuner change your fan settings to help the car run cooler

the op only stated it was in the 220's while idling with the fans off... for a stock car that is perfectly normal... now if he is seeing 220's while driving then yes either there is air in the system, the condenser/radiator is plugged with debris, or maybe a bad thermostat... if you want to lower the idle temps you are going to have to change your fan settings and/or get a better radiator/fan setup... a lower temp thermostat will not change idle temps on it's own without changing the fan settings, it will just take longer to warm up to operating temp

"Burping" is really not required in systems with the overflow tank at the highest point in the system. Even the Service Manual does not call for it with an antifreeze change. Just follow the factory fill procedure and you won't have a problem with air.
I have had mine since Dec. 27 and I have noticed that I never hear the fans come on. I assume it is because it is so cold or is the fans that quiet? Mine runs about 208 while driving. How could I check the fans, I assume if it gets hot enought they will come on. What temp do they come on, c5 2001, 46,000 miles. Thanks
Normal op temp, according to numerous posts, should be in the 190-210 range, but some cars will run a little higher and some a little lower. Its not a number etched in concrete.
