Default Temp gauge erratic

Hi guys and thanks for any thoughts. Recently when I start my 2000 manual vette the temp gauge rises faster than normal and gets up to around 250 degrees f and stays there for a minute or so then drops back down to 180 f and then reads normal until I restart the car. It has a 160 f thermostat. I have gotten out of the car and felt the hoses and they are warm but not hot either before or after then temp change on the gauge. Is this a gauge problem, sending unit or a faulty thermostat. By the way this is can LS7 blown motor with over 35 k on the new setup and never any problems...thanks

No all is normal with the hose, thanks though

I would check the thermostat. It almost sounds like it is sticking and not opening up initially.

Yes I think you may be correct. I was hoping not as I have to take the blower off to get to it but no problems I've had it off many times before... Thanks guys

Did you check it with a hand held infrared thermometer? That would verify the engine is getting up to 250. Do the cooling fans turn on?
