I am planning to change coolant next weekend. I have read that in order to get the most coolant out, I need to get it up to operating temps to open the thermostat, turn on the heater and raise the back end. I got an extra petcock in case I have trouble with that. 1/4 in drive ratchet turn 1/4 turn to open. Are there any other tips or things to know before I get started? I am putting Dexcool back in.

Don't rely solely on the petcock to drain as much as possible. In addition to the petcock, I unbolt the therm housing with the lower hose still attached, for more/faster drainage of the block. Raising the rear is not a bad idea as well. I also like to use distilled water for the refill mix. It's cheap at the grocery store. Just don't mistakenly grab the mineral water that's often on the shelf next to the distilled.
Btw, turning the heater on does nothing for draining coolant in this case. C5s have no heater control valve in the system and coolant circulates through the heater core 100% of the time, regardless of where you set the temperature selector ****, unlike old school heater control systems. Don't bother.
