I had it done yesterday on my 2001 MN6 (it had locked up over the weekend). Even though the 2001/2002's don't fall in the recall range, my service guy still went ahead and ordered the part and had it done under warranty. But he was too busy when I picked it up to give me the details on what was actually done.
I have read elsewhere on this forum that, with this recall fix in place, I could basically "fake out" the CLB process now without having to order the actual CLB parts. Is that true? How can I tell for sure what was done? What do I need to look for?
Re: Question about Recall # 01044A (Column Lock) fix (XTREEME)
Hi there,
There are 2 separate fixes, one for the autos, and one for the MM6.
The automatics, you will install a feedback relay into the wiring harness between the lock, and the BCM. Then, you install a retainment plate, which eliminates the lock plate of the previous design.
Your brake transmission shift interlock will act as the theft deterrent, instead of the column lock.
The MM6 is different. We install an updated column lock actuator, and change the wiring, and a relay for the column lock acutator. This assists in better operation of the column lock actuator.
You steering column lock will still be functional on the MM6.

Re: Question about Recall # 01044A (c4c5specialist)
C4C5, can you give us M6'ers a list of parts to get so we can get the A4 solution? I had the recall done a year ago and I quite simply dont want to hassle with it ever locking up on me.
I've heard the bypass kits dont work after the recall so I'm willing to do the dealer A4 fix myself if that'll work.
Hi there,
Which bypass, as some dealers were getting caught NOT replacing the actuator. This is why they revised the bulletin to include the retainment nut for the steering wheel.
That was what the A revision was for.
Please let me know, as if you go to your local dealership, and reference the recall notice, it will have the information for the automatic also.

Re: Question about Recall # 01044A (c4c5specialist)
Actually I'd rather just replace the locking shaft with a dummy one like the new A4's use. I don't trust the fix. I park the car in the garage every night so its not going to get stolen anyways. Even with a locked column, if somebody wants my car they can get it so I just want to not worry about it.
Fitchner should sell a kit....all I need is part nums.
Does anyone know if this is an actual recall? My VIN number was finally included in a bulletin posted on the Forum quite awhile ago. However, I have had the car to the dealer a number of times lately and twice they told me that it was not a recall, that it was just a bulletin to get it fixed after it locked up.
The tech told me today that the 2002's do not have this problem, it ceased with the '99's. I asked if I could see the "TSB" and he said it was "protected material" from GM and I was not allowed to view it.
How do I verify if the tech really put some comments with this repair notifying every GM dealer on the planet that "I caused the problem?"
Re: Question about Recall # 01044A (c4c5specialist)
After reading all about this column lock issue for the last couple days I assume I had the TSB done since my wheels doesnt lock with the key off? I hava a 99 A4, I can hear the 'zip' sound from the column when I turn the key off so the actuator is working.
Hi there, Mike,
Well, if you had the column lock bypass before the recall was performed, yes, then, I can see the point here.
You see, the bypass will not produce equivalent electrical load on the BCM to correctly clean contacts within the relay system. This is why they will have a problem doing the recall, with the bypass installed.
I have had several issues with BCMs due to incorrect electrical loading of the internal relay. IT happens sometimes, and should not be confused with a BCM condition due to normal failure.

So now my question is: If the 2001 and 2002 are not part of this recall, does that mean its because they already have the updated actuator and wiring in them from the factory? IF so, then it is not too reassuring, considering that they are still malfunctioning.
HI there,
Yes, they have been updated, however, it is still a mass produced vehicle.
The prevalence of 01-02 occurances is substantially less then that of the earlier models.
Yes, it does happen, but not even a quarter of the amount of the earlier amounts.
I hope this helps, c4c5 :chevy
...Not on a Friday at 5:30 does it help!! :mad :mad
Why can't Chevy "just fix it"????
I agree. I guess that recall fix they did for me really doesn't mean anything then. It could still lock up on me at any point (even while driving).
I'd still like to know what I need to do to JUST DISABLE THE LOCKING MECHANISM COMPLETELY?
