Default Dynotune after Headers/Cam install

This winter I decided my project would be to install new headers and a cam. Took a few months to finish as it got just to cold to work in the garage ( and I was being a sissy) as it didn't seem to get above 20 degrees for a few months. Finally finished the install this past weekend and I was shocked it fired up the first time! Removal of the steering system and putting the timing chain back on IMO was the hardest part but the rest went pretty smoothly.

Upon starting it, she was running VERY rough and wanted to stall constantly but I was able to drive it a few miles to make sure it was all bolted together correctly. One of the mufflers was hitting my sway bar so had to adjust that, and had to put on some heat shielding to the O2 wires as they were touching the exhaust and melted a little. Now the drivers side header is hitting the underbody slightly. Got to jack it up again and see if I can either move the header slightly or I'll have to grind the underbody.

But yesterday I took it down to Country Corvette in West Chester as I was meeting Mike at Rapid Motorsport there as he uses their dyno for tuning. Mike is a great guy and did a great job dialing in my 99 and she's putting out some impressive numbers for just an intake/headers/exhaust and cam.

I'm running a blackwing intake, Corsa extreme exhaust and Texas speed headers. Cam is a Torquer V2.

Max Hp is 395 and torque is 386 to the wheels, which puts that about 442hp at the crank. Almost 100hp increase from stock. And the torque curve is pretty flat and instant. Mike set idle a little high, at around 900rpm's and tweaked a few other items as I use the car for HPDE often.

And a video before the tune. Idles much smoother now.

Cannot wait to get it back onto the track. Though I need to save up for an alignment/corner balance/coilover setup.

Very good numbers, a set of mildly ported LS6 heads and you would be deep into the 400s hp range.

Good to know, thanks Warren. With 110K on the engine, i'm sure some heads will be needed in the somewhat near future. Ok maybe not needed but wanted.

Though first thing is a harness bar and harnesses.

Had to climb under and adjust the exhaust a little as the passenger side muffler was hitting my sway bar and the drivers side header was hitting where the underbody panels are welded together. I was able to move the header slightly and bent the duck bill where hte panels are welded slightly. No more terrible noises.

Though I have noticed my fuel mileage has dropped a bit! And it does not like to be under 1500rpm's.

Nice numbers, car must feel great. Do you feel that you lost any low end torque?

Any reason they tuned the car to 7K when stock redline is 6k?

no, if anything it feels like I've gained quite a bit of low end torque as it's at 300 almost from idle. Power is smooth and linear but at idle the car shakes and sputters a bit from the big cam. Driving through parking lots is a challenge as it wants to buck a lot at low speeds.

I did scare an older lady yesterday while I was getting fuel. I started it as she was walking by and literally made her jump. I apologized for that.

Are you figuring a 15% driveline loss? If so your power would be 395/.85 = 465 at the crank.

Sounds likes that's a yes. Stock engines run fine between 1000-1500 rpm and will pull higher gears from that range.

The tuned was ended at 6800. With the correct valve springs that should not be a problem. Stock ls2&6's redline at 6500 with the same lower end.

Op have fun with your new set up!

I was figuring on 12% since it's a manual trans. Seems that manuals are about 12% and auto's are about 18%. At least that is what the tuner said.

It is fun to drive! Opened it up a few times and she'll take off in a hurry. Still a burning oil smell and looks like the passenger side rocker cover might be leaking just slightly. No drips on the floor, just a little I believe while it's running.

Though anyone have any tricks to get the 2001+ oil dipstick in? I broke the first one and picked up another today. Shocked at how much of a pain it is.

I was torn between the 228R and the V2..... I chose the 228R as I wanted a little more under the curve, but your car now has me wondering if I should have gone v2......

I guess I can always add heads or SC when I want more power

Great numbers! It feels good to have a project come together successfully. You will be around 420+whp with a good set of heads I'm willing to bet. I remember when I did a H/C/I build and tune I was right at your power level. Then LT headers took me up to 430. You have all but the heads. It will make the same effect once its all working together. A FAST intake and LS2 TB will take you to the 430-440 area.

Mike does a great job, he has tuned both of my engines. I have an appt set up with him on 4/18 down a Phoenix. Good numbers for your setup, have fun!
