Default Question for those with a BeCool radiator

Car is at MMS finishing up the 388 all-bore install. They said my stock radiator isn't keeping up. I'm thinking of getting a Becool radiator.

Question. MMS installed a transmission cooler. Since it's installed do I need to get the radiator meant for an automatic or can I get one made for the manual? It's $35 cheaper.

Get the Be Cool Radiator that is used with the Automatic. Think of the Radiator as the Primary cooler and the aftermarket trans cooler as the secondary cooling you need.

What is the difference between the radiator meant for the automatic and the one meant for the manual?

The automatic has an area that cools Transmission fluid within the Radiator. This is what keeps your Trans oil constantly cool. If you only had the aux cooler on the car and was stuck in traffic your Trans would overheat and break down.

So will the transmission cooler plug into that?

Didn't somebody have trouble with this radiator fitting awhile back?? I think I was looking at it back then, but there were to many problems with it. Hmmm maybe they are fixed now.

Hello,

MMS is recommending a BeCool radiator for your 388 motor? Funny they made no mention of this when the where pressing me for more money to upgrade to Stage3 heads while buiding my 388 which as we all know turned into a nightmare. I would think your stock radiator would due just fine. If there's something wrong with your stock unit I would just replace it with a new stock unit.

No, they are recommending one that costs like $700 or $800. Al said that once the coolant gets hot it won't come back down. I have a stock thermostat in there now. I was going to go with the Becool because it's a lot cheaper. He said the larger the bore (more important than total HP or stroke) affects the amount of cooling capacity I need.

Nothing wrong with my stock unit. I told them to just ship the car back and I would figure it out.

Gentleman:

What is the cost of a BE cool Radiator? What is the most economical after market radiator that can be puchased? Is is the Be Cool or are there other options (which perform just as well) for less money?

Becool is the cheapest I found. $569 for the automatic version from Jegs. I think the manual version was like $535.

Problems fitting the BeCool radiator,
1. If you have an automatic, there are 2 kinds of fittings for the stock trans cooler lines to attach to the radiator, depending on when your car was made. Supposedly BeCool is shipping the radiators with both fittings in the box, just make sure your combo will connect properly before tearing the car apart.
2. The BeCool will push the radiator shroud up slightly, causing a gap along the sides. Pull the top of the shroud down and back with cable ties, and do a little careful sealing work on the stock foam rubber sealing strips at the sides, it works out OK.

cjones:

I've had a Be-Cool radiator for almost 3 years. It is the manual version. If you think you need additional transmission fluid cooling then get the Automatic version, but it would seem to me that if MMS has already installed a trans. fluid cooler, then you should be good to go in that department.

My Be-cool was purchased at Jegs and although it is a very snug fit (because of it's thickness) it has performed very well over the years. My Coolant and engine oil temperatures are at least 30 cooler during high speed hard running on road racing tracks.

With some help from a friend, I installed the Be-Cool myself. You do have to make sure the shrouding around the radiator is sealed well. As Gearhead Jim suggests, you can use some tie raps along the top to secure the shroud to the radiator, and the use of some foam window seal will also be useful to fill up any small gaps. You want to be sure that all the available air is going through the radiator and NOT arround it. :yesnod:

If you need any further help, give me a holler.

My car will be home tonight and I'm going to see how hot it runs myself before I order the new radiator. If it gets much above 192 degrees (which is stock) I'm going to order the Becool. What thermostat are you guys with aftermarket radiators using?

I'm running a 178 degree themosat. In this hot weather driving around town the coolant temps are mostly in the 190 to 200 range. Fans are programed to come on a 195.
