Default Need help, sporadic no start issue.

02Z will sometimes not start, lights come on etc., just will not turn over, nothing. Sometimes it will start after a few times, sometimes have to let it sit. (same issue on. 95). It may not happen for months, then several times in a week. Happened recently a couple times, then today. So I took codes before I got it started, then cleared them, drove it, then checked again and no codes.

Codes:
60 ipc. U1255h
Radio codes
A1 rdcm. B2265h
BO. Rfa. U1096h

Any ideas?
I am going to spray the key and ignition with contact cleaner tomorrow.

Check your positive battery cable for tightness both at the battery, and where it attaches to the starter solenoid. Don't just eyeball it, but check it with a socket, after disconnecting your negative battery terminal first of course.

It's also very possible it could be the solenoid itself has gone TU and not just a loose connection.

I know it is not the cable on the battery, had it on off many times. I will check on the starter the next time I have car up. I really don't think it is that though. My 95 does exact same thing, seems like key doesn't make contact, or some other security thing, seems like time resets it. I try various things each time, wipe keep, lock/unlock, get out and let it sit 15 min or a day. Usually will start after I keep trying, sometimes after an hour, a few times had to wait a day, but always starts right up after day, same exact thing on both cars, both have the pellet keys.

I did clear codes when it didn't start, then drove it a few minutes later after starting, then I checked it later and no codes.

It is unnerving because I Never know when it will happen, or correct itself on both cars. Stranded me once.

Another vote for the starter solenoid. Next time it happens, try tapping on the starter with the handle of a screw driver or handle of hammer. (in other words, don't beat the crap out of the starter) If it starts after that, it would be a good indicator that your solenoid is getting stuck.

As far as a battery terminal connection problem, you know it's not likely to be the case, as you said you had lights, etc.

Power is not getting to the starter motor itself. Although there could be other causes, a loose connection and/or bad solenoid are number one on the list. Problems such as this do not "correct" themselves. They get worse. Ignore this and you will very likely be stranded again.

Did it again today twice, again no codes. I could hear a click, so I think it might be the TDR relay, but sounds like it comes from radio area not floor. Like others have said I think it is probably a bad solenoid, probably same thing on my 95. How long do these starters usually last, should I go ahead and replace both? 52k miles

mileage is meaningless to a degree. it's all about heat and start cycles. headers really speed these to their death. solenoids last around 10 years on average

there are a few things that can cause this. the starter switch, the starter relay under the hood.

my car did this at one point and i replaced that relay and the starter. cured the issue. but, that's me, may not be the same situation

amazon typically has the best prices on ac delco parts

I fond a Bosch for $110 w a life time warranty, think I will go with that and hope it solves problem. Especially since it looks like replacement w long tubes will be a PIA.

if you have long tubes, any kind of heat shield you make will help. the heat those things put out really shorten starter life

A NEW Bosch starter (which INCLUDES a new solenoid) for $118.02 including shipping, and you want to waste your time messing with a solenoid????? Why??

AAMOF, if you haven't yet checked your positive battery cable where it attaches to the solenoid, you could be wasting even more of your time.

I was talking about a starter, I am not buying a solenoid. The starter I mentioned will not work, even though Amazon said it would. I found a Pure Energy for $91 that is supposed to be good, and getting a heat shield too.

I will check cable, but major project to get to it with long tubes. At that point I will put in a new starter regardless since so much to get to it, and don't want to do again on a 12 yr old starter.
