I'm going to tackle replacing my swps this weekend. I've looked over all the threads on replacing it but the only concern i have is that my steering wheel doesn't lock, it never has. I installed the lmc5 module myself but before that my steering wheel didn't lock either. How critical is it that my steering wheel doesn't move?
VERY IMPORTANT. But you should be able to monitor and control that. At home I have good link where someone did not do that but used a voltmeter to get it correct. Will try and remember to provide that link later. If not, please remind me, I'm old.
Recentering the sensor would require a tech 2 scanner to reprogram it to the pcm to tell it where straight ahead is if you move it. Hunter alignment machines have an optional obd hookup when performing an alignment to fix it as well. You will have to call around to see who has one

Incorrect
The Tech 2 scanner is used to monitor the analog output voltage during the "re-centering" step of the diagnostic procedure. It cannot "reprogram" the SWPS. Additionally, the centering routine is carried out by the EBTCM (or EBCM, as applicable), not the PCM.
As others have said, it is imperative that your steering column remains stationary during the removal and subsequent installation.
That being said, you can use a Tech 2, or a multi-meter, to check the voltages and center the column and/or sensor yourself. Check out this post on the subject: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1584561341-post3.html (it is only one post from a longer thread)
Here is the link on how to center the sensor with a voltmeter. I have not done this so if you questions I would contact the originator. Hope your swap goes well. Please let us know what you did.
If you are replacing a failed SWPS you should not expect to get correct/normal voltage readings.
Well, i'm not convinced yet that my swps is bad. I'm getting codes 1287 and 1288 also every once in a while 1214. I'm not clear on what the voltages should be reading. Should both blue and green wires be reading 2.5 v? I'm getting 2.5 v on the green wire while steering wheel is centered but not on the blue wire. If i turn the wheel while reading the voltage on the blue wire, i can get it to read 2.5 v. Can someone explain what normal readings should be. I don't want to replace a swps that is good.
I'm also getting codes C1287 and C1288 on my 2003 coupe, with 104,000 miles. "Service Active Handling" pops up on the display several times on a 1 hour drive and the 'Traction Control Active' amber icon is on. Also, noticed the cruise control would disengage when this happened. I assume it is the swps so will subscribe here.
