Default Keyfob issues

OK C5 experts, I have some issues with my keyfob that I can't figure out. I recently had a dead battery and have gone through the reset instructions in the owner's manual (1. stand close to vehicle and press both buttons on keyfob and wait for horn to sound. 2. put key in ignition and press both buttons on keyfob.) Neither has worked. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

You may have to reprogram them in the DIC.Have you tried to relearn them that way or are you just trying the relearn procedure?

Do this:

To match transmitters to your vehicle:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver Information Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed, press the RESET button once. The message HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB in the DIC will be displayed.
5. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the first transmitter simultaneously for five seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned (matched), the DIC will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to learn the second transmitter.

I have followed this procedure but the DIC has not recognized the key?

Just to be sure we're clear, that procedure learns the fob, not the key. What happens when you try? At what point does it fail?

Did you put the new battery in correctly, not reversed (flipped over)?

There is only one way to program the fobs. Either you are not following the instructions exactly or the fob is not working correctly.

Do you have both fobs or just one? If both, are they having the same issues? If it's your only fob, considering getting a used one online. I picked up one for around $30. If the used one works, then your problem is solved.

OK this just happened to me. Leave the car off key and take your fob and hold it over your battery and hold down the two buttons on the bottom of the fob and wait for the horn to sound. I tryed to hold down bottom from driver side of car and wouldn't work. I was standing next to battery to put charger on and i tryed it again and it worked. You have to hold it over battery. Try that. Or maybe it was just a coincidence. Doesn't hjurt to try.

It was a coincidence. The receiver is behind the driver's seat.

As often happens, the OP did not state the year of his car in the question. All years are not the same. According to his profile, he has a 2000. You won't find a fob for a 2000 on ebay or anywhere else for $30. You can buy one from gmpartshouse.com for around $80. I would not buy a used one, you'll end up with the same issue. There is a fix for loose connections inside the fob. I'll link it here in case the fob is the issue.

If your fob was working until the battery died, and it won't work after you replaced the battery, maybe you put it in upside down with the polarity reversed, like I suggested before. Did you open it up again to check that? And can you check the voltage of the battery you just put in to make sure it's OK? Simple things can be checked first before you spend a lot of money and time on more complicated issues.

The DIC never gives me a message that it has learned the fob

I did not put in a new battery, the existing battery went dead and was recharged. Sorry, I thought you were referring to the car battery not the key fob battery. I am pretty sure the keyfob battery goes in with the printed side up?

Are you talking about car batt or fob batt. If it's fob batt he might have rechargable batts.
