I just replaced my squeaky AC idler pulley. I found the squeak by using a length of hose held to my ear to determine where it was coming from. New pulley and belts (gates) and no squeak.
I can put water on Surpentine and it gets quiet/have even used soap and it gets quiet.
Just went through this.
Typically, if introducing something to the belt and it quiets it up. It is usually the belt. I used Tire talc. Though a new belt will sometimes squeak too.
A bad pulley will squeak at the bearing and nothing you put on the belt will quiet that. I ended up replacing all the tension pulley assemblies just as preventative medicine. Didn't intend to when I started out, but the AC belt is such a pain to change, I opted to only undertake that task once. When I replaced them it only made sense to replace the main belt ones too.
