I'm looking at getting new plugs and wires. I'm pretty sure I am going with the NGK spark plugs 50-TR55. I'm having trouble deciding on wires. Looking at both the Magnecor's or Taylor's Spiro-Pro or ThunderVolts. Can someone tell me about the fit and installation problems anyone has had (if any)? I've heard Magnecor's are a pain. Headers are on the list in the near future. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Go with the Thundervolts if you plan on using headers in the future. Found them at http://www.thunderracing.com for $69.95 plus freight. Used to live in Grand Island, 20 years ago. Anyway welcome to the forum!
as a matter of fact, I spend some time today installing the MSD 8.5 mm wires. They say low resistance, and I agree.
I put my multimeter on all the different brands of wires laying around my garage, and a short Jacobs was above the same resistance as the stock Packards. The MSD were 10% of their numbers! Yeah, 90% less resistance.
I am happy so far! Haven't driven the car yet, just started in garage. :)
I've run both the Magnecors and Taylor Thundervolts (running them now). They both perform equally well but the Thundervolts provide much better clearance for my FLP headers. The Magnecors are shaped exactly like the stockers allowing you to use the stock heat shield with them. I use the Taylor Fire Sleeves with the Taylor wires. Both are excellent products.
I've heard complaints of possible EMI with the Spiro-Pro that generates noise on the radio on some cars.
Whoever told you that Magnecor wires are a pain just doesn't know what they are talking about. I have Magnecor wires in my FRC and they are the same size as the stock wires which allow you to use the stock heat shields. Also there is no radio interfearance noise and the fit is perfect. Other than those positives, I have noticed an increase in Miles per gallon on highway trips of about 7%.
Can't comment on the other brands other than that low resistance doesn't mean diddley when it comes to good performing plug wires. Why not go to http://www.magnecor.com and get some good technical information.
thanks for the response. what is your sense on the use (reuse) of the stock metal heat shields? I went with an aluminium material, but maybe the stocks one are better?? Bob
