do a search for old topics under my name (slo vette) and you'll have your answer--just look for the subject line that has k&n in it! lengthy discussion on this topic, lots of great tips. helped me alot. if you don't want to take the extra few minutes, the long story short from k&n tech people is that you don't need to install the gasket because, as you said, it already is a snug fit. the gasket is useful if, for some reason, there's a weird fit or manufacturing defect where the airbox just doesn't get a really snug fit when closed. hope this helps.
I had the K@N with no problems without gasket, but recently purchased the z06 airlid and put in gasket while changing at the same time. It is a real b**ch and ultimately needed to take out entire airbox to do it and lid as those :mad filter straps came loose!!
Thanks alot for posting this thread & thanks everyone who answered it. I was getting ready to pitch all of it, the filter, the airbox, :mad . I'll try installing the filter w/o the gasket.
Thanks all for making my life easier... :yesnod:
The gasket must be used on an F-body and it is stuck to the bottom of the air lid (they both use the same filter), the way the vette airbox is set up with the straps it may not be necessary to use the gasket.
