I put $10 in last night, was on the way to work this morning and saw the check gauges message pop up on the HUD looked saw low fuel and the needle sitting on E.
Is this a common problem??? I don't have time to take the car to the dealer either.
Yes, it's a very common problem. Mine has done it three times in the last 7 months. It's the sending unit in one of the tanks. GM knows all about it, and can fix it under warrantee. You might do a search of the forum for more details.
Ben, There is a TSB out which covers this problem, (which is very common, by the way) Your dealer should repair the car under TSB # 01-06-04-022, SUBJECT: Inaccurate/Erratic Fuel Level Gage Readings (Install New Sensor, Strainer and/or RH Fuel Sender Assembly), DATED: 03/16/2001. Even after this kit is installed, GM is saying that the system is sensitive to gasolines with a high sulfur content. Several forum members have reported improved results with the fuel gage situation by utilizing the Chevron and Exxon brands of gasoline. Supposedly, these brands contain lower levels of sulfur than found in other brands. Good luck!
Many of us have had this problem yet GM still doesn't have a fix for this issue... We will be fixing these units well into the future and at over $700.00 bucks a wack! I wish that there was a better solution... :nonod:
I could tell within 25 miles when it would go to empty and when it would return. It was every tank of fuel. It made me crazy! I got it repaired for $755 last September and it's been okay since. There is a tsb covering the problem. I was very pleased with the dealer's work but not pleased that I encountered the design flaw.
Replaced both sensors on my 00 twice and it still went to he--. Gm won't fix it out of warranty, think it sucks. It gets erratic also and will show gas when there is none also. Ran out of gas 3 times one month. Traded car and problem off to someone eles.
