When I bought my car(2001 Z06), it had multiple codes thrown but the check engine light on the dash was NOT on. This leads me to believe that it has burnt out(unlikely) or has been removed by someone in the past, possibly to cover up some issues with the car. I'm not even going to get into that though. I've done multiple searches with no luck. Does anyone know what size bulb I need to replace the one I'm missing? If nobody knows, I guess I'll just tear the dash out but I was hoping to have as much info as possible before I get started. Thanks!
Not all codes will trigger the check engine light. The most common triggers for the check engine light are emissions related.
You can verify if your check engine light is working without tearing into the dash. Put your key in the ignition and turn it one click to the right as if you're going to start it but don't actually start it. The dash lights illuminate briefly and the gages will sweep the entire range. The check engine light will be one of the lights illuminated.
Thanks for the replies. I have no codes right now because I finally fixed everything that was wrong and throwing codes. It only took me a year and a half. Haha. But I check my codes frequently with the methods above due to not having the CEL working. And, turning the ignition key and not seeing the check engine light illuminate as the gauges sweep was another reason that led me to believe it was burnt out or pulled altogether. I just forgot to mention it in my first post. I guess I have a project for this weekend. Are those lights something worth upgrading to LEDs?
Once you remove the IPC the bulb is easy to remove. It is in a plastic holder that you rotate to remove. The originals had a blue coating on them to "make" them appear more white than yellow. There are various size bulbs used in the dash. I can look at my spare IPC and identify what size it appears to be. If you want to go back with an original bulb PM me and I can provide a source for good used ones. Otherwise I can give you a good Radio Shack number to use. The color should not be an issue since it is not on all the time like many other lights in the car.

I know this is an old thread, but you ever figure out what the issue was? Was it the bulb? I am asking because I am running into the same issue. Thanks
