I am thinking about getting my rings replaced soon. Can anyone share their experience with this. How was the car after the job? How long did it take? Did you get a loner? Did it correct the problem? What is your oil consumption now? etc...
HI there,
24 replacements done, and all consumptions have been around 1 qt in 3200-3500 miles.
This is from about 1 quart in 450 miles before the ring replacement.
The job pays about 20 hours, but it takes about a week, to correctly tolerance, disassemble, inspect, and reassemble.
This is with removal of the engine from the car.
I hope this helps, c4c5 :chevy
Re: Rings replaced. Your experience? (c4c5specialist)
c4c5specialist, my 2001 MN6 uses 1 Qt per 1350 right now. So if I had my rings changed at your dealership, I would have no improvement? I thought the GM spec says 1 Qt per 2000 is the limit?
By the way, will your dealer allow re-ring cars to have speed parts such as heads and cam to be added during the re-ring? Since the parts are off anyway, it should be free labor at least.
Hi there,
NO, your oil consumption will improve some.
Will I install aftermarket components while doing a rering?? NO.
I must first confirm 1 quart of oil consumption in under 2000 miles.
The issue that I have with installing aftermarket components, is that there is not a guarantee on these parts. Every job I do, carries a full warranty. Sometimes, there are issues with aftermarket components. Every aftermarket component changes the way c5 runs, even if it is claimed that it does not.
Sorry about the typo on the previous post, having problems with my keyboard.
Besttoyou, c4c5

Any info really appreciated! :seeya
EDV,
Had my rings replaced by a dealer in paramus nj, received great service, enterprise pos loaner for no charge. As mentioned took one week, dropped it off on monday, picked it up saturday. I posted in the general section on my experience, just do a search for a complete write up. I am sure that c4c5 will give you great service should you choose to go there.
It has been only 200 miles since then so it is too early for results, will post them after 1000 miles.

Re: Rings replaced. Your experience? (edv2122)
I had the rings replaced on my 2001 Coupe last November and have not had one problem since then. It took about 3 days, I got a rental due to having the GMPP extended warranty which authorizes a rental if the repair will take more than two hours (I've used this feature about six times in the past four years).
I was re-ringed approx. 6500 miles ago, no issues since then. At that time, I also had them fix every other issue I had with the car, and the only recurring problem is the brake rotors are showing signs of warpage, and are out of spec according to my dial indicator. I change my oil every 2000 miles, so since the re-ring I cannot report any oil consumption at all. Before the service I had used 2 quarts within 1700 miles. I run the car at the strip at least once a week during the warmer months, and have had no issues relative to the rings, and the performance was not affected. In fact, performance seems to have improved slightly (I noticed approx. 5 hundredths in ET but cannot verify if it was the rings that did it). I would recommend finding a good dealer in your area, and let them take care of it. Just be sure to take pictures of your car before service if you don't know the dealer performing the service. I have heard horror stories about scratches and nicks, and the dealer stating the problem was there prior to service. Good luck...
Re-ringed several thousand miles ago and no associated problems since then.
Oil-consumption was significantly reduced, exhaust tips and rear end aren't covered in soot, and when you check the oil its still gold and clear unlike before when after 300 miles it would already be black.

Re: Rings replaced. Your experience? (MJM)
Matt,
I see you are in my neck of the woods. I am in North San Diego county. Which dealer did you get your ring job done at? I burn about a quart every 1200-1500 miles and have been going back and forth on who to trust with it.

Actually I had the ring job done a few months ago when I was stationed in Virginia. You might try posting in the Pacific forum to get dealer recommendations. Once you find a reputable dealer, my advice is to definitely get the work done. I am very pleased that I did.
