C5 automatic shift indicator incorrect
Have a 2004 C5 A4 (daily driver).
The shifter cable broke 6 weeks ago and had it towed to a corvette shop. I bought a new gm shifter cable which they installed. It has worked perfectly until yesterday. The shift pointer was always correct.
After a 45 minute drive, I was idling for 5 minutes - so I put the car in neutral. But the car stayed in drive even though the indicator showed neutral. Moving the shifter forward, I was able to shift into reverse, but not into park.
I parked car and tried to put the shifter in park, but it wouldn't go easily - had to jiggle it. After a 2 hour rest, I started the car (holding my breath) and was able to put it in reverse and then drive. Made it home.
But how to troubleshoot this? I don't have a lift.

You'll have to get under it. There's a white plastic clip going to the trans linkage. It can be adjusted by popping the side with a screwdriver. Then line up the shifter and lock down the clip. Hopefully it's just that, and not a problem with the cable somewhere.
