Is there any reason not to replace the brake fluid w DOT4 instead of DOT3 on a C5? I know GM specs DOT3 but don't understand why not DOT4 for a car like this since it has better high-temp characteristics.
DOT 4 brake fluid is for "heavy duty" glycol based brake fluids that have a higher wet boiling point of 311 degrees F and a dry boiling point of 446 degrees. This type of fluid is sometimes specified for performance vehicles or those subject to high brake temp.
As far as i know the only reason why they use DOT 3 instead DOT 4 is that DOT 3 can be used longer than DOT 4 fluid. DOT 4 fluid use to absorb water faster than DOT 3 which makes brake fluid changes more often neccessary.
I have been using Dot 4 in my brake system for quite some time. The system gets bled quite frequently and it has not been a problem. I use the blue fluid, this way if I have a leak, I know exactly what it is just by the color. ;)
