Default Giant Torque Tube Snap Ring Part #???

Trying to order a new retainer ring(snap ring) for the 12mm torque tube I just purchased. I took it apart to inspect the couplers and bearings. All good so I'm going to toss it back together.
Having trouble finding the part # for the giant snap ring that holds the rear bearing housing into the torque tube. You know, the big *** snap ring everybody mentions when tearing down a torque tube.
I found this # but not sure if this is correct. GM parts house isn't sure either.

"snap ring is a part# 88894018. GM nomenclature is: RNG, PROP SHF TRANS FLG RR BRG RET (Outer face). Translation: Propeller shaft transmission flange rear bearing retainer."

Also, the O-rings that reside in the tube and rear bearing housing.
The one that sits in the front of the tube is easy to swap out for a new one. The two O-rings in the rear are inside the bearing housing. As I'm not replacing the couplers or bearings, should I leave it be? Or at least replace the O-rings? If so, is it easy to pull apart to replace them? I wasn't sure if the unit is pressed together and end up screwing up the two bearings.

That's it. 71mm dia.

Unless you know they're damaged, I'd leave the o-rings alone.

I said screw it. Cleaned the tube real good. Sprayed it down with Aluminum Brightener.
Cleaned and lubed the exposed o-ring with some motor oil and coated the landings in the tube for the front bearing and the rear bearing housing. Slid the shaft back in and stopped at the snap ring. My pliers wont squeeze the ring in far enough. The tool bottoms out because of the angle of the tips. I'm going to unsrew the tips and weld them on at an angle so they will squeeze the snap ring ends all the way together so I can slip it in place. ****** tools!!! I'll get the job done with it though!

Snap-On PR7 works amazing for it, you can typically find them on ebay for under $100.

looks pretty, too bad it won't be seen

Yeah. I tried it on my front and rear cradles when I swapped mine out. Worked so good I did the same to the control arms and spindles. Makes them look brand new.
Around $10 at Napa Auto Parts. If the aluminum is clean, it will bleach it out. Leave any dirt or grease and those areas turn dark. Just clean those areas and treat again.

Why? Does the snap ring need to be replaced after removal?

Only in special circumstances.
Such as the ring is overstressed on installation, or signs of wear.
I'm not sure welding is an equivalent of the original assembly design.
A regular visual inspection schedule every six months might be a good policy.
Ya know, mirrors and flashlights to inspect the complete weld ring and surrounding areas.

2 cents

I was looking to replace mine as I had to pry on it to get it out in the first place. My snap ring pliers would not hold it long enough to work it out. Had to resort to being creative getting it out. It was slightly tweaked afterwards so I was looking to replace it. I gave up looking and after examining the ring, decided to reuse it. It wasn't bad enough to worry about.

That's about how mine removal/installation went, except it wasn't noticeably tweaked since I had my wife pry it out at that point, so I could maintain as much tension as possible with the pliers

That thing was the biggest pain in the *** ever... the worst part was getting it apart only to find that my bearings and bushings/giubos were MINT

At least you know! Piece of mind was worth it. I did the same. I bought a used TT out of an 04' Z06 with 38K on it. Or so I was told. To upgrade my 97' to the stouter setup. I took it apart expecting to at least replace the couplers. They looked and felt like new and the bearings were smooth so I said screw it and cleaned it up, put it back together. Although the snap ring isn't in yet, lol.

Yep, I had to have the wife help me put it back in, too

Yeah, it's good to know that it's all good in there, but damn, it was almost a letdown after fighting that snap ring
