Default Removing the screen from MAF

I have read in a few different places that some have removed the screen from the MAF. I just installed a Halltech intake system and need some info concerning this. Is a good idea to do this or not. Also read that it possibly can cause surging or that people have experianced this after making this mod. :blueangel: :reddevil

Welcome to the forum! If you do a search on "MAF" you will come up with more posts than you want to read! Its really not a good mod on a stock motor, the benefits are usually temporary. One of the members recently did a dyno comparison with and without a screen, there was no HP gained!

Leave it in. Some guys have problems after doing it, some don't. Why risk it for the small (zero) gain you get from doing it?

Sweetcharity, I too put in a Halltech intake system within the last three weeks. While I was at it, I pulled out the maf screen. I haven't dyno'd or done anything 'scientific', I felt there was definately a SOTP increase in power. Now whether that was due to putting on the Halltech, removing the screen or both I don't know, but I know that the 'thought of less restrictive air flow' has made me think it runs better!!! Do what you think and hopefully your search will help you make up your mind...good luck! By the way, I've also read on the forums that the 'stock' ZO6's don't come with the screen. Have a good one! Happy to be here, proud to serve! :flag :flag :flag

I guess that I may end up leaving it in from the sounds of it. Interesting though about the poss. that the ZO6 may not have this on their MAF.

Same here...no surging or other affects...but I'm not sure if it gave any additional power since I also installed the Blackwing and power duct.

Scott,
I considered removing my MAF screen when I installed the Blackwing. But after reading all the opinions and experiences of others on this forum, I decided it wasn't worth the risk of performance problems not to mention the voided warranty aspect. The "screen" appears to be designed not to catch bugs and other debris, but to promote laminar flow over the air velocity sensors. As mentioned by others, there appears to be little, if any, verifiable power or torque gains. By the way, how do you like your Magnaflow exhaust?

I have the Blackwing and took my screen out and have no problems at all....also if no screen was bad then why does the 2002-2003 Z06 have no screen?

Unless you have the ablity to tune for the changes, MAFT/Autotap or whatever, skip it. Not worth the potential for problems for 0-4 hp.

Forget it; not worth the effort. You will screw up your air metering for naught. Cars with the screen are programmed to work best with it in place. I tried it on my 2k and it seemed ok until I hit WOT and then it was a mess; reduced power, speed, etc. Spend the time doing a little detail work..... :smash: :yesnod:

Well I am decided to leave it in, if I mod the MAF it will be with the larger dia. ends. The Magnaflow is in my neighbors gargage awaiting my return home for installation. I am away (business) and of course it shows up the day after I leave. Will let you know about them when installed and properly tested!

I also removed the MAF screen on my C5. The differences (if any) are so small that they are not noticed. However, mentally I feel like I've done something to the car. Whether or not the result is good or bad it's something. Tweaking and tinkering I believe becomes an addictive part of C5 ownership.

Removing the screen is supposedly worth 2 degrees of timing, and how that converts into horsepower depends on the ambient temperature and how the computer reads it.

I removed the screen on my 01; didn't have surging before and still don't have surging. The relearn didn't have any effect on surging because there wasn't any. Seems to run a little better without it and the popping was reduced. I have Indys and modified box/K&N with Xpipe. :smash:

Give into the peer pressure and just do it! :jester I just did it to my 97 about a week ago with no problems. I could tell when I first took it out when I decelerated the RPM's would drop a little more then normal but never as low as to almost stalling. Once the PCM learned everything it runs great now.
Maybe its just me but my vette feels more responsive :smash:
