Brake Job
I need to have new brake pads put on my car. I called a local dealer who quoted me $650.00. I thought this was excessive. Any thoughts or recommendations? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area...
Herb, looks like its time to Have a Mod Day for your Car!! :) Brake Jobs are a piece of Cake.... Exactly what parts do you need for your car? Let me know ok? :yesnod:
Brakes are not that difficult. Make sure you have the rotors turned and the rest is pretty simple. It would also be a great time to bleed the brakes if you haven't already done so.
I don't believe it is necessary to turn the rotors unless the pads have scored them. I think it is better to leave them be so you don't remove material from them making them more suceptable to warpage. Just my opinion though.
Never turn a rotor unless it has been damaged/scored. Turning the rotors provides no benefit. Even the GM Service Manual instructs not to turn them.

That has been my experience too. I have had rotors turned where they left the car with a slight vibration.
I am about the least mechanically inclined guy you'll meet, but I don't mind paying good money for things. It just seems to me that $650 is a little excessive.
Steve, I just plan on putting on some Hawk Street pads, or whatever pads come with the latest Z06s. My understanding is that it is not too difficult to do the brakes, but I'm the guy that has problems with all those Xmas presents "so easy to assemble that even your child could put it together"... :)
Brake Pads around a hunnert bux.
Simple Hydraulic Floor Jack about twenny bux.
A set of combo wrenchez at Seaz about 40 bux.
BTW, pick up a good 5lb HAMMER while you're at Sears. It'll come in handy in case you don't have the "correct" tool.

100 + 20 + 40 = 160 deniero and you're all set to change brake pads from now on, along with a lot of other repairs.
If you've got enough manual dexterity to brush your teeth, you can do a disc brake pad RnR.
DO NOT have the rotors turned unless you have REALLY screwed up and let the pads wear down to metal. IF you did that maybe you'd better pay the $650 to have it repaired.

VetNutJim,
Thanx for the advice. I said I was mechanically challenged, not brain dead. I can feel the brakes being less efficient than before, but they are nowhere near metal...I'm a good jockey, just not good at fixing the horse. :yesnod:

Herb, get your parts, We (the crew and I) will take care of it for you. vetterdstr
Steve,
Thanx for the kind offer...I just ordered the pads this afternoon...I'll touch base with you after I receive them. Thanx to everyone that responded, too. :chevy
7/8" Bolts (2) loosen with breaker bar caliper from control arm.
Follow website directions
Buy new bolts, put Red Loc-Tite before reassembling, torque to 150. http://www.rozdesign.com/corvette/brakes.htm
Group Hug for everybody that responded. This has been one of the more enjoyable posts I've read in a while. A club buddy offered to install my EradiSpeed rotors, HAWK pads, Goodridge SS lines and bleed the brakes. With the right tools and skills this really is esay. We have since done another buddies car and we just keep getting better. Painted the calipers while we were at it.
