Default Rebuilding a C5/C6 Differential

Where you get the shims and other needed parts? Getrag in Germany?

Are J-44616 and J-J-42168 the only special tool sets needed?

The dealer should be able to order the shims.

The two tool sets are the only specialty tools I have for the job, and have done about 8 gear changes.

pinion and carrier shims, you should be able to order through any gear retailer relatively cheap.

I've never done any rear end work. Is there a write up other than the VHS that comes with the kit. (I don't have a VCR).

Thanks for the responses.

See this post. It covers all the tools and procedure including shim measurement. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ld-how-to.html

As for shims you can get them individually from the dealership for around $10 a shim. Or if you get the Yukon rebuild kit it is suppose to have the shim pack in it. Yukon gmvet-c5 is the part number.

I would stronly advise you not to do this youself unless under the direct supervision of someone with a lot of experiance on these rears. I know several people with a lot of driveline experiance who won't touch them; I also can name you a couple that do... but shouldn't.

Thanks for the link. Guess I was searching using the wrong words.

I rebuilt my TR-6060 with no experience or issues. I'm confident I can tackle a differential.

From what I understand the biggest things are having the tools and the time. Most folks I know do not want to mess with them because of the time involved to do it right. Additionally, the tool costs are a lot. I managed to get all the Diff tools unused off ebay for about $325. If you do a search on Ebay, the main tool sets are the Getrag shim selector, and Getrag C5 diff tools, and finally the diff holder.

I was looking on ebay and saw the 2 sets of kent moore tools for a pretty good price. I just think of the money I could save. I have the tools to fix everything else on the car, why not be able to work on the differential.

I agree, plus you will know what you have in the diff. To me it is all about having the knowledge.
