I was quoted 1600 to replace an AC compressor with failing bearings... does this sound right?
NOt for me....
Compressors are between $300 - $500 at autozone, (about the same at Rockauto) so shouldn't be that much more elsewhere. Not a fun job but shouldn't be more than a few hrs labor. Add the price of R134 and maybe a new belt, and it should be 1/2 that.
**** that man diy yourself there isn't much the average joe can't do on this car. I have yet to take my car in except the clutch and next time I will be doing that myself..Get your hands dirty learn about your car and upgrade some performance parts while your in there. Feel good about saving a boat load of money
I replaced mine for around 500-600 in parts. The replacement compressor was $450 from the dealership, and I replaced the accumulator/dryer, orifice tube, some o-rings and recharged the system. You can rent a vacuum pump from Autozone and maybe even gauges.
