I used an Escalade/Yukon 6.0L/6.2L starter. It bolted right on (with an additional longer bolt) and works great. It's listed as 1.7kW like the original LS1 starter; 5.3L truck starters are only 1.3-1.4kW. Here are the part numbers I have for it:

I used Dorman #72181 for the second long starter bolt, which is $2.99 and available in most local parts stores.

You can get a Delco Remy (GM) one from AutoZone new or remanufactured. I highly recommend you get the style with 2 long bolts since it can prevent breaking the block mounting if you have hydro lock or get a severe backfire while cranking. I did a Thread on this a couple of months ago.
Not at home but I can get a couple of part numbers for you when I get home. They are about $200. You can get good starters for less but just get a 2 long bolt design.

I'm using a new (not remanufactured) Bosch. Part # SR8581N Very reasonably priced. Works great. It comes with the extra long bolt.
Also, the Remy, part number 96222 (also new) fits and works fine as well.

Bosch makes great stuff. If I knew I could have gotten one at half the price of what I paid I would have gotten one.
