I have a 1999 C5 convertible, the other day I was sitting in line for a local parade, after sitting a while I shut my car off, when I tried to restart it she was dead as a door nail after locating the problem which was a loose negative battery cable I started car but when I tried pulling out it died, tried several more times with same results so I disconnected the battery and then reconnected to reset computer, I tried again and it died again so I set for a min and tried it again and back to normal no more problems so far. Did computer just need resetting because of power loss or it a clutch safety switch going bad like a dealer thinks. Seems to me if it was going bad it wouldn't be running now.

wouldn't even waste much time troubleshooting, the clutch switch is $6.94 shipped on amazon, replace it and see what happens. if that doesn't fix it you can troubleshoot
Post the H or C or HC that follow each5 character DTC. List the codes under the associated sensor. For example 10 - PCM or 28 - TCS or 40 - BCM etc.
I expect that you will have one or more BCM codes pointing to a column lock failure. A run down battery causes the column lock logic to fail. Your symptoms of the engine stalling as you let the clutch out sounds like the 2mph column lock fuel shutoff. I will further speculate that you do NOT have either a CLB or LMC5 installed for the column lock system. The battery may have been just below the needed level to prevent the column lock symptoms when you first tried to move the vehicle.
Thanks very helpful info. Did not know the C5 had the diagnostic gauge on it, Thanks ! I spoke with a mechanic friend and he advised to replace column lock bypass so i got one on the way.

part number is D2214A
The clutch switch won't cause the car to die when you let it out. It only disables the starter function when the clutch isn't in. You can still roll off and drive a C5 with a bad clutch safety switch. Don't waste your time on that. Follow 8vette7's instructions. The problem is your 2mph fuel shutoff programmed in by GM.
I'd use an LMC5 because it bypasses the whole column lock system, but the CLB has worked for years too.

I am pretty sure the clutch switch is just a permissive to the ignition circuit to start the car. Once the car is running the switch doesn't come into play, I wouldn't think. If it did, how would you ever let up off the clutch and keep the car running????

Exactly! It completes the circuit to the Theft Deterrent Relay only during the starting cycle.

Thanks ! I have ordered the bypass switch. Thanks for the info.
