Default 918 Valve Springs

Is anybody running 918 valve springs if so, have you had any problems with broken springs?

Don't do it if you are value your stock or modified heads. They suck and I got some pictures of my stage II heads if you would like to see them. It is not pretty.

SInce breaking two 942 springs on my carteck stage II heads and cam car i have run 918s with no problem after 2500 hard miles now. I have never heard of anyone having problems and have only have heard good things about these springs. THe 918 spring is the spring of choice right now by top tuners such as cartek and speeddemon motorsports, etc. Austrian Vette is running in the high 9s on spray with his heads and cam stock bottom end LS1 with speeds as high as 144 mph in the 1/4 mile and he is using 918s as prescribed from chris at speeddemons, without no problems.

Garceeya, your response is the first negative one i have specifically seen here in the forum over the last several months. Can you kindly tell us what exactly happened, after how many miles and what specs on the cam you were running when yours broke? I assume they broke and ruined your heads :U ! Look forward to details. Was there another mechanical failure which was the true cause of your spring failure?

Nitrovette, the reason I asked was because some of the guys over on LS1 Tech.com have reported failures. I was wondering if anybody on this forum has had any problems. Like you I have heard 918s are the best single spring out there and I am disappointed to hear of these failures.

You guys might want to read the post in this section: "Is this the new RWHP record for a cammed car?" He posted that his 918's had problems and screwed up his heads. Good luck!

Mitch, 4 or 5 failures out of ALL of the Comp 918s are GREAT odds. The 941s had a MUCH more prevalent history of breaks, etc. They still are the best single spring replacement out there.

That's an irrational and biased position :nono: --
despite the fact that you personally had an issue with yours, the VAST, OVERWHELMING majority have found them to be relatively bulletproof, assuming they're installed correctly.
Comp Cams designed these springs specifically for the LS1--no other spring is.
The track record of only a handful of failures, out of the hundreds, if not thousands more, that have had no issues with them at all, speaks volumes--
I run them to 7000RPM pretty regularly, and you can see from my sig that I'm not using a baby cam---

918's are the best choice out there for almost everybody---
Period:)

There have been some recent problems with the 918. I was at LG getting my Vararam installed and they had a car come in with two broken springs. I think there has been a couple of others but I can't remember. Now this may be an isolated incident, but I hadn't heard of any failures prior to this.

The cars with the broken 918`s.....are these MN6´s?
I´m sure most (if not all) are!!

My 918 work perfect, and I have run them up to 7000rpm´s.

I don´t remember posts from A4´s having failed 918`s.

I'm one of the folks posting on the LS1.tech forum. Dropped a valve due to a broken spring at about 6k, accelerating from a light, around a corner, and not at WOT, two weeks ago. The valve punched a hole in the piston and the head, all sorts of debris everywhere!!!! The engine is now on its way to ARE for a 436 rebuild., which I'm looking forward to, but had planned for next year not this. I don't know if these springs are more at risk with high lift, fast ramp cams (see my sig) but a number of them have definitely broken.

CompCams may, or may not, stand behind things. While the 918's seem less prone to breakage than the 941's, I do think both are highly suspect, especially in more aggressive application.

Let the buyer beware, and BE CAREFUL. Before my most recent update, I had asked my engine builder about dual springs. He chose the 918's for a variety of reasons. Boy do I wish he hadn't!!

Thanks for all of your responses guys. But after e.mailing Andy at A&A I have decided to go with a dual spring. I am sure the 918s are good springs but the dual springs will give an extra margin of safety.

Hey Mitch,

When Chris@SpeedDemon put the stage III heads in my car two days ago, the 918 springs and valves on the stock heads (from MTI T1 cam package) are still looking great. And that's is after 8K miles with countless number of bottles through them.
