Well I just got my 98 vette about a month ago and have noticed that when it shifts(I have and automatic) I hear a small short chirp sound. It does not do this every time and really i have no clue what it could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I know the 97's had a revised idler tensioner because of the noise they made. Have you looked at your serpintien belts ? My buddie with his 98 C5
had a chirp comming from his motor so we cleaned all the pully groves and replaced the belts all this at 45K miles and his chirping has not returned.
Hope this helps......................
There is a TSB for 1997 - 1999 Corvettes, and 1998-1999 Camaro & Firebirds equiped with the LS-1 engine. It involves replacing the idler pulley because the bearing race was crushed upon assembly. The new pulley has a thicker race.
The idler pulley was replaced by my dealer under the new car warranty and it eliminated the "squeak" or "chirp". It could also be heard at idle.
The TSB is #99-06-01-007, "Accessory Drive Squeak (Replace Idler Pulley). It instructs the dealer to replace the idler pulley with a new assembly, part #12564401. The labor time allocated is 0.3 hours. Good luck.
