Default rear diff swap

Hoping for help...I have a 1999 base model with 2:73 diff. I picked up. 3:42 from a 2001 manual. I see the ring gear is exposed. I haven't taken mine out yet. Is there a cover that needs to be swapped as well or does that ring gear remain open when bolted to the auto transmission? I'm sure I'll see more when the 273 is removed I'm looking for a heads up before hand. Thanks

There is a cover between the diff and the trans. You'll see it when you pull them apart.

You'll have to get your PCM reprogrammed for the gear change.

You will love the responsiveness of your car with the change.

Pay attention to the direction that plate goes when you take it apart.
You might also consider a new seal that goes in the middle of it.

Good luck!

(although if you're careful enough while removing the plate and you don't damage the seal you should be fine reusing it)
I would definitely replace the oring that goes around the plate, and definitely replace the output shaft seals on the diff before you install it.
The plate is labeled for "trans side" so as long as you can read you should be fine.
