I also have a desire for a service manual, but was concerned that it would be too technical for me to get much use out of it without a lot of significant mechanical comprehension upgrade on my part. I hope it is ok to latch on to your thread with my concerns.
I would also like to have the information in a less expensive and digital format.
I just can't cough up the money for a print copy, sight unseen, for fear it will be full of a lot of calls for special tools and shop techniques unavailable to me because of low skill. I can handle a Chilton's manual , but stuff written for a trained pro might be over my head, as it often seems so when I am exposed to the information, and I might get little return on my purchase. So a lower entry price would be good, as always.
The factory manual is fairly easy to read, however it does call for using factory instruments for trouble shooting. The amount of usable information included in the three books is well worth the expense in my opinion.
I need some help finding the right service manual. I find a set of two for $275. Can't seem to find anything that's pure digital.
Having the paper book is nice because if you're like me, you add little notes here and there. I purchased the three volume set from www.helminc.com. If you're not convinced yet, I can't begin to tell you how many times those three books have paid for themselves with my '98 coupe. I am a mechanic myself, so maybe that gives me an upper hand, but even without that feather in my cap, the books do an outstanding job at explaining system operation, identifying where components are located, ALL of the necessary torque values, and very detailed troubleshooting for all of the codes the computer can throw! As for the factory tooling.... I'm sure it's nice to have those kind of resources. Since I do not, and probably you don't either, it just requires a little thinking outside the box Tools can be made from the simplest things!
