I'm looking into replacing the cam in my stock '03 Z06. I'm in CA, so it will be a fairly mild cam and no long tube headers. When replacing the oil pump, is it best to go with a high volume or high pressure model, or stay with a stock unit. The engine wont be modified any more than the cam, with the possible exception of a CAI and C6 Z06/ZR1 exhaust.
I went with the Melling high volume with the standard spring on my standard LS1 (no cam). It works well once the car is fully warmed up. When cold the pressure gets 70psi+ if I give it some gas.
In hindsight I think I should have went with a ported LS6 and called it a day.

I used a melling 10295, stock volume higher pressure... they do include a stock pressure spring if you want to change it out... it has been in my car for about a year and a half since I did the cam and no issues... I have read the higher volume pumps can suck the pan dry and starve it of oil, that was enough to keep me away from that pump
I was told if the engine is not built for a "high pressure" pump is not a good choice, stock pressure high volume is "ok" or just the stock pressure/stock volume
high pressure pumps are make for race engines with loose tolerances
I used the SLP "clearanced" pump because I'm running a double roller chain. I used the high pressure spring. it holds 40 PSI of oil pressure at idle / hot.
I would recommend the Stock ported pump or a 10295 Melling, as stated above no use in a high volume pump with stock gm bearing clearances. We sell both
