Default Timing cover problem

I have a 98 Ls1 that wore out the front timing seal and the balancer. When tearing it down there is a large gap at the top of the seal to the crank and a narrow gap at the bottom to the crank. The cover cannot go down any farther as it looks like the pan gasket is almost crushed as it is. Is it possible to machine a small amount off of the bottom of the timing cover? The car has 94K and apparently someone worked on it before that did not know what they were doing.

NO, there is a tool that centers the timing cover on the crank. If it's not in the CORRECT place, your seal won't last long. You have wither the wrong cover/pan or both.

I understand that part but what I am saying is that even with the tool it cant move down enough to center the seal. I even compared it to another timing cover and they are identical. That is why I was wondering if you could mill a little off of the bottom of the cover.

Most likely the timing cover was replaced without using the proper alignment tool.

This is the front timing cover which I can align with the damper only if it would drop down enough which goes back to my original question

Loosen oil pan, center timing cover, tighten down, then tighten oil pan.

This sounds like a good plan in conjunction with the alignment tool.

That sounds great but the cover looks tight against the pan now. If I loosen the pan to make clearance and then when tighten it back when I drop the timing cover down wont the pan then leak because I made a new clearance?

I thought the pan gasket had metal inserts at the holes so you couldn't over compress them.

when the engine is assembled the covers go on first, then the pan goes on last. the pan gasket is an aluminum frame with a rubber seal molded into it. so what happened is when the cover was removed, the oil pan gasket decompressed and raised up. you are trying to force the gasket down at the same time, thus causing the alignment issue.

Thanks-I am going to give your idea a try. Will let you know the results. Thanks again.
