I decided that it would be easy enough to change the pcv but I am having the devil's own finding it. I did find a loop of hose (and only hose) going from one 'outlet' to another just under the throttle body - seems a logical place for the valve to have been. It was so cracked and brittle it fell apart when I handled it. You can see where it was attached - the lower silver-colored and upper very black attaching point. I see no other unaccounted for hoses and there is no outlet at all on the rear passenger side rocker cover as I have seen pics of. Is that where the pcv would have been? Could it be that it had no pcv valve at all? - bypassed/eliminated? Might account for a rough idle and whistle when cold.
Thanks, I just now ordered it - $11 with shipping. If there is no PCV in the hose, does that mean this newer design doesn't need one or maintenance to that effect?
Hate to go the weekend without 'vette - maybe I can rustle up a short-term fix when I return the PCV I just bought at O'reilly's.
The 2004's have the built-in orifice ( in the nipple coming off the valley cover ... there is no external "PCV" valve, just a piece of hose between the nipples. Search the forum for 2004 PCV and you'll probably find some threads verifying this.
There are three different PCV hose layouts used on the LS1, LS6 and LS2 engines as follows:
1997 thru 2003 LS1 – PCV system removes crankcase vapors off both valve covers. An external PCV valve regulates flow.
2001 thru 2003 LS6 – PCV system removes crankcase vapors off the valley cover. An external PCV valve regulates flow.
2004 and beyond LS1, LS6 and LS2 – PCV system removes crankcase vapors off the valley cover. A non-removable 2.5 mm orifice built into the valley cover hose fitting regulates flow.
Thanks for the information. If this is stock for a 2004 LS1, it would've been nice for O'Reilly's parts database not to have given me a pcv for the older system.
So as not to go 'Vetteless over the weekend, I got a longish loop of hose so as not to get a kink in it, zip-tied it loosely to the filler neck to keep it away from the belt - I'm an irreverent hayseed, I know -- the OEM is on the way..!
Guess I found the source of my vacuum leak with that cracked up old hose.
I picked up 1,000 RPM at idle and the AC doesn't all but make the motor die at idle.
I don't expect any change when I put the oem part in.
