Help! - Over heating, but not really!
Started out as a broken belt. It frayed and slapped around the engine for a while, hard to say exactly what damage was done.
Got that part fixed fine, but since then I'm having water temp issues. After starting the car the water temp jumps up fairly rapidly to 250, 255ish within perhaps 10 min.
When I had it apart to change the belt I found that part of the belt had wrapped around the water pump pulley. I was able to remove that and the water pump pulley seemed to move freely. It never seemed like that belt fragment had stopped the pulley. - Also when in there I went ahead and changed out the thermostat, so there's a new one now. None of this seems to have change the temp problem.
I might suspect the pump at this point however here's what has me second guessing: When the water temp is at 255, the oil temp remains under 200. That seems unlikely. - the air temp today was 78 degrees.
Could this be a temperature sender problem? Could a wire be cut. If that were the case wouldn't it just jump high right away?
Also, it seems that the temp comes down to about 220 at times (which is iffy since I try not to run the car at those temps.) But when it does fall it will jump up again very rapidly.
YES! - I did check the fans, they were running, but that could perhaps be intermittent and perhaps I just have not seen them when not running.
Anybody got any ideas? I need help on this one.
Thanks in advance!
I've never had this problem before, but sure enough, I went through the burp procedure and I was dumbfounded at how much more fluid I was able to add to the system.
In the end it would seem that the issue is ultimately not enough coolant in the system. Once I burped the air out, things are back to normal.
The things we never knew. Whew!
