Just picked up a Torch red 02 with just 36,000 miles and a 1 owner. It is a 6 speed and I am not crazy about the shifter. What are the best options for a short throw shifter for a C5? This car is pretty much in mint condition. Thanks
Do a search, this has been discussed often. MGW is popular but pricey(you get what you pay for). I bought a new c6 shifter from Gene Culley gm parts house. It's about half the $$ and works great with the urethane shift box bushings. Be careful what you buy, a lot of the aftermarket shifters are crap. I used one for about 2 weeks, hated it.
Nobody will argue, the stock shifter sucks!
So if I go the C6 route, is it a straight take off and bolt on? I think I read the shifter boot will not work. Also is the throw shorter and more precise? That is what I am looking for. I am also considering the Mgw shifter.
I didn't change the boot, no problems. I haven't driven a car with the mgw. The people that have them swear by them. Either c6 or mgw would be a big improvement. The mgw uses a billet shifter box.
I went ahead and ordered the c6 shifter combo from GM parts warehouse. I had a 2012 mustang with a SR short throw shifter and really liked it. After reading all the posts I could I decided the c6 shifter was the best solution. I don't like what is in there now. There was a different **** with some plastic piece underneath and it was falling apart. I now don't have any **** I own that will fit.
Make sure you get the urethane shift box bushings. Then do the adustment procedure? There is a ton of info on how to properly set it up. Zip corvette has the bushings.
I got the C6 shifter from GM partshouse and the bushings from Zip corvette and installed them on Saturday. Took about an hour or so and is much better. The wife came out and gave me an extra set of hands. The hardest part was keeping the fuel door switch connected when putting the console back together.
hurst here (was installed when I got the car) it has tension adjustments stock settings was way to stiff but after messing with it I like it much better then the stock (friend has a stock one) cant say any thing about MGW never drove a corvette with one.....
