After I bought my automatic '98 coup, I found the battery would go dead overnight. When I put the shift into park. I found I have to pull back very slightly until I feel a "click". Then when I open the door the accessaries go off ( radio etc) and all is well. Otherwise, if I hear the radio is still on when I open the door, I don't have the shifter in the right position... hence dead battery in the morning.
I've read there is a park solenoid in the shifter. Would this have anything to do with my issue? Is there an adjustment? It only takes about 1 pound of pull back to feel the click.
Thanks for any help.
After checking the retained accessory power schematics, it appears to built into the BCM. My info source does not give a description of the inputs needed to activate it. The door ajar switches input the Bcm.The Bcm commands the door modules and radio off through the serial data lines. If your systems are as exactly as you describe, every time, the park/neutral switch and or shift cable adjust may be incorrect. If you have access to a scanner, you can see what gear the PCM thinks it's in. If not I would check and correct the shift cable and neutral switch adjustments.
Thanks for the input! If I have time this weekend, I'm playing carpenter for most of it, I'd like to take a look at the cable adjustment. I guess that raises another question. Where, said being, is the cable adjustment? I haven't had this or any Corvette up on ramps yet, so I'm really interested in seeing what's underneath.
As I remember, there is a linkage from the ignition switch to the shifter. Not at home with the FSM now but I did look into this for someone a few weeks ago. I don't seem to remember an adjustment but not sure.
Hope I am not throwing you a curve ball since I don't have an auto and have never worked on one for anyone.
No worries about a curve ball, sometimes they lead in the right direction.
As far as a linkage. I had the ignition switch out when I repalced it during the HUD retrofit. No linkage there. My gut tells me it's a problem in the shifter. With 132,000 miles on the car and countless times the shifter has been shoved forward into park. Makes me think the wear is in that area.
Gawd, I am getting old. Apparently what I remembered is the Shift Lock solenoid harness that does go from the shifter to the brake petal. Looked in the FSM and there is no apparent adjustment associated with it (solenoid). May be some wear there causing your detent issue. The actual shift cable does have an adjustment at the rear.
and never discount checking to see if the seat adjuster switch is stuck.
mine was dead every time i came out a couple years ago & come to find out (after buying a new battery), the switch got stuck in the 'move down' position.
