Default A4 Trans fill

For you A4 guys, how do you fill a "dry" transmission? The trans holds 10-12 quarts, but the pan only holds a couple. I turned mine up on the side a little, and it still only held around 4 quarts. I haven't been able to get the engine to run (another issue) to try and get more in, but I don't want to run the trans dry while Im trying to "pump" fluid in.

Any auto I've filled I just fill the pan, start it, fill again, select first gear, fill again, select 2nd gear and bring the speed up until it shifts to 2nd, fill again, etc repeating for each gear. At first you may find the transmission won't select a gear or won't shift due to a loss of pressure and then as you are filling and going through the gears it'll begin to work for all gears at which time you basically have to get the level right and you're good to go. It's easier to use 2 people to do the job.

Basically it's a bitch w/o a lift and 2 people.
I did mine on stands. Rigged up a pump to run with my drill and used a gallon jug of ATF. Pumped it in with the engine idling till it ran out the fill hole. Then climbed in the car and cycled through the gears. Then continued pumping fluid with it idling.

Prob a better method. But that's what I came up with.

Fwiw, might as well dump a quart under the car and on yourself before starting......

That's for sure. Great engineered car but they dropped the ball on the trans fill and checking
I was afraid if I ran it without much fluid, it might hurt the pump (run dry) because it is SLOW (and messy) pumping in a quart at a time with a little hand pump

the little hand pump that you can get at harbor freight is 7 bucks and works great.

If truly dry & on the bench, a lot of that 12 qt is in the torque converter which should have been pre-filled...

I could barely get a 1/2 quart in the TC, and then some spilled out when putting it in. The RPM trans are dyno tested, so they will have some "residual fluid" still in them, so its not completely dry. Still takes time to "hand pump" 10-12 quarts in.
