After the installation of my borla stinkers, I desided to remove the cats,
Hollowing them out is more likely. Question is will I have a problem with the check engine light or the computer or whatever else on the car.
The car is stock except for the z06 /k&n air filter, 160 deg. stat. and stingers.
The car is a 2002 with 6 speed/ 3:42 gears.
Anybody do what I am about to do?
Thanks guys
I haven't read any really positive reviews about doing this, except maybe about a bit of sound improvement. Chuckster posted his cat-gutting experience in the post linked below. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=322183
I pulled all (4) cats on my 2001 and never looked back! :yesnod: Best free H.P. /TQ. you can get IMO...Those cats are over 30lbs. of DEAD WEIGHT and soooooo restrictive. You WILL need 02 sims to keep the codes away.Check out my homepage for full install pics (NO CATS) of the TPIS headers. Yopu might want to think about a off road x-pipe. I got mine from Florida Performance(Robert) at 954-491-1012 tell him I referred you..:D
Why? You will NOT see any sotp improvement. It is not worth the effort and it WILL cause problems; if not for you (it is a felony), for the next guy and for the rest of us. Just put a coat of wax on it and drive it. :smash: :nono:
Since we bracket race it was a must for us. The rear O2's give constant readings to the PCM and it was hard to dial the car for each run.....varying as much as a 10th some times. Now with the O2 sims on the car is like a xerox machine.....only the air changing does the car run different times. We can make 3-4 runs in a row and be 1-200ths difference!
On power, I would agree with Vince.....we did notice quicker ET's, but not by alot. I do believe it increased power though.

I did it.. And Patches (thank you..) gave you the link...
Here is my opinion...The stock cats suck anyway...
1. Pull the intermediate pipe and gut the cats...Get some 02 simulators. Don't buy em new they are too much ($200).. I bought em used from a forum member for $55.. So..It cost me $55 so see if I like it.. So far I LOVE the sound of a hollow cat...:D :D
2. If you hate it..No big deal..Get new high flow cats from C&L for $80 bucks each. Just take the intermediate pipe to a muffler shop along with the new cats and have em welded on...That will cost what? $50-$75 bucks?
Either way you win..And have fun in the meantime..
YEs it does have a smell.. More than a lawnmower but much less than being stuck behind ANY diesel engine.. :D
Most of these posts demonstrate less than informed opinions. Check the Mufflex web site, they show dyno numbers on a standard C5 - before and after cat removal. They picked up 10-11 rwhp and rwt all across the power band after the removal of the cats. I went from 408/376 to 433/397 (SAE numbers from the same dyno) soley with the installation of a Mufflex off-road system. You'll need O2 sims or you'll get check engine lights. Also it's advisable to have dyno tuning to check air/fuel ratios to make sure you're not running lean.
The only thing I have to add is that I would not gutt my cats, I think it sounds too hollow. Also, I'm not sure you will see too much of a gain on a stock head and cam car. I lost power when I did it to my car on stock H/C car but I got it all back and more with my H/C pack, especially with my TPIS LT's ;)
