Just had the rings replaced on my 2001 Coupe and from what I can tell so far I would recommend this fix. There was a lot of carbon in the heads, probably as a result of excessive oil consumption. The car seems noticeably quicker than before...and oil consumption seems to have stopped. Gas mileage seems just as good as before.

Re: Updated rings (dangrass)
Had this done on my '00. Solved the problem. Just be sure you know how careful the shop will be in fixing your car - ask a lot of questions about the experience they have and procedures they will use. Don't be afraid to check on the progress quite often.
A leak down test, before or after the "ring fix" can not determine anything about oil consumption or the quality of the repair. All a leak-down test can do is measure blow-by when the engine is in a static condition.
Mine was in for 2 weeks, mostly due to avoidable delays waiting for parts. From what I could tell they could have done the job in ~3 days if parts delays hadn't happened. By the way, they removed the engine in order to do this job. As a side note, they found that my clutch throwout bearing was in bad shape (after 1.5 years/35k miles!) and replaced the throwout bearing/slave cylinder while they had the engine out (at no cost to me). Does anyone know about a problem with this part? Has it been redesigned or should one expect it to wear out in just a few years?
I remember a post ,about a month ago, concerning a 2001 re-ring and the member was very happy that the dealer replaced his clutch while he was at it (under warranty).
