What is the small hole in the center of the MN6 housing where it bolts up against the rear end? After I drive a couple hours red transmission fluid will come out of this hole and run down on the bottom of the trans. case. Not a lot, just a few drops.Could this be from the transmission being over filled ? My car is a 02 with 1600 miles. Thanks,HEB
Hmmm...If trans fluid is leaking out the rear seal on a M6,it will leak directly into the rear differential and mix, unlike an A4 which has dead air space between the two...In other words, trans fluid would have to leak past the rear seal, front diff seal, than past a big o-ring to come out of the hole between the two units, and wouldnt be red anymore (if thats the hole you are refering to)...
Most common M6 leaks are from between the two case housings toward the rear of the trans. The halves are sealed with silicone sealer and sometimes fluid leaks past the sealer...Is it possible that fluid is leaking at this point, and running back towards the differential?
I thought at first that oil was leaking out between the two case housings but I have wiped it off repeatedly and drove the car, then drove it up on my (Kwik-Lift ) to check it out. It would be running down from the hole,as I said not a lot and its red. I even put a piece of Duct tape on the hole to catch the oil and this works for a short time but then the duct tape will come off from the heat. What is in the second housing? Is it a empty housing to just fill in the space between the trans. and the differential? differential oil is green, correct?
The rear trans casing is where reverse gear and 5th gear are located...Like I mentioned, trans fluid would have to leak out the output shaft seal, past the diff seal (actually located on the trans to prevent diff oil from going into trans),than past the big o-ring that is between the 2 units (prevents diff fluid from leaking out that hole)...I cant see how it could happen...There could be a remote possibility that the rear trans housing has a porous area, though I have not seen that either.Also,2 of the housing bolts should have sealer on them or trans fluid can leak past the threads (2 top ones I believe)...
If you cant find the source,it looks like the rear diff will have to come out and the seals replaced. If need be,the rear trans housing can be removed and resealed without removing the trans, while the diff is out.

Re: C5-TECH,Oil-Leak Question? (C-5 TECH)
I am getting a little of the same thing. I think it is coming out a little higher up on the side of the trans and following the seam down the side and finally dripping on the bottom. I did a little re-tightening on the bolts that hold the rear casting section to the main body of the trans. I'll see how this goes.
I have just noticed a leak on the drivers side near the rear axle shaft imput and am also having difficulty finding the source... It leaked once down the spring and I haven't seen it leaking again... Frustating... :cry
