My headlights pop up, and the lights are on when I start the engine - with the switch in the off position. The first couple of times, they stayed on/up for only about a minute after starting the engine. Now, they stay on/up whenever the engine is on.
Coincidentally, this issue began around the same time I had the active handling (F55) removed from the computer.
If you have the Twilight Sentinel option is it ON or OFF?
Also, always-
I don't have the daylight sentinel option.
I pulled the codes and - there were no codes.
The lights didn't come up when I turned on the key or started the engine. They popped up when I put it in reverse and backed out of the garage. However, after I pushed the reset and ran the codes, the lights didn't pop up the next couple of times I moved the car.
Maybe "reset" cleared whatever the gremlin was. Only time will tell.
Was there something displaying to cause you to hit Reset?
No, that's the first step - in the instructions I have - for reading the codes.
However, the gremlin is back. Apparently, I was mistaken about the twilight sentinel. I assumed there was none, because the is no "Auto" option on the light switch.
After more reading, there is a sensor in the defroster panel (not the HVAC sensor). I also found the "Twilight" in the DIC and it says it's ON. The owner's manual I have is for an 03, not 04, and it indicates I should be able to turn it OFF using the reset button but, it won't. I can only assume that either the 04 is different or, this is a Canadian car.
I removed the auto headlight relay from the fuse box - which seems to have worked. Both the sensor and relay are pretty inexpensive so, I've ordered both. I'll see if it fixes the problem when I get the new parts. Since I didn't know the car had a twilight sentinel and it hasn't worked, I won't miss it if the new parts don't fix it.
I believe that if the car was a Canadian export car there is an identifying RPO that should be listed in the RPO's on the glove box door. Check to see if there is an Z49 listed. According to the list of RPO's I have for the C5, Z49 means:
Z49 Modifications, Canadian, Mandatory Base Equipment
I recall reading that the Twilight feature is NOT easily turned off on the Canadian export cars.
No Z49 in the RPO codes and, if I remember from the carfax, it was sold, new, here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I read, in another thread, the only way to turn off the twilight sentinel in a Canadian car is to remove the relay. No sweat either way. If I can fix it, fine. If I can't, I won't miss it - since it hasn't worked since I bought the car.
