Not very hard at all. Check youtube for a video on how to do it. I put a C6 shifter in mine and love it and it was a lot cheaper and easier than the MGW.
I am not a mechanic so I would pay some one to do this. Is C6 a brand?
C6 is the next model. Your's is a C5. Look on eBay or on the C6 For Sale Forum here. I put a C6 shifter in mine. It's great. Shorter throw, feels great.

yes... the c6 **** attaches differently, it uses torx screws instead of threading on... so if you get a c6 shifter you will also need a c6 **** which is much better than the c5 **** anyway
Another MGW owner here. I hated the stock shifter. MGW is much, much, much better and very high quality. Install took about 2 hours following the youtube videos and taking my time.

Thanks for your reply. I will have one put in in the spring. Do you recall the name of the you tube video or can you give me the link? My email is mss@solarus.net

you can use your stock **** or if you want to use the c6 **** you can get a shifter with a c6 shaft, that's what I did... he included very detailed instructions when I bought my shifter about 4 years ago and I'm sure he still practices the same attention to detail today... my boot was all bunched up due to the shorter shifter so I opted to go with a shortened boot from redlinegoods
